Through a blog post on the 15th of April 2015, Games publisher EA announced that some of their free to play games on PC would be shut down in a period of 90 days. Games that will be taken offline are Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World and FIFA World. Their popular free-to-play game title Star Wars: The Old Republic will continue to be supported, however.

“Some of our other PC free-to-play games are not as popular as they once were. So we find ourselves announcing the tough decision today that we are stopping development and winding down support for four PC free-to-play titles. These were pioneering experiences, and we’re humbled that, over the years, so many of you joined us to enjoy the games and the community.” The official statement reads.

The main reason sited is non performance of the games, as these are not as popular as they used to be. The announcement of the shutdown has also been updated on the games individual pages of the games Battlefield HeroesBattlefield Play4Free,Need for Speed: World and FIFA World. It goes into details about how the shutdown will affect the current player base on these articles. The games will go offline on July 14th 2015. While most of these games have been out for close to five years, games like FIFA World which was only 18 months old never took off its beta stage. EA has already shut down in game purchases and new account registration for these games.

Popular titles Star Wars: The Old Republic will still continue to function with more new story-driven game updates planned.  No mention has been made for the browser based Command & Conquer Tiberium Alliances. We expect it to continue functioning normally as there have been no specific announcements for the game from EA. Notably there are many other Free to play titles available from the publisher on mobile devices, through their acquired studios like Popcap game and Pogo Games.

About me: A collector, I hunt for stuff that was missed. I’m the guy who goes into a music store and asks the staff if they have some secret music cd in the backroom storage closet. My life ticks away while I watch anime, reading fictional novels or stalk Wikipedia for information completely useless to me.
