2. Forge goes free to play

And so if you missed the hotkey based PVP aspects of older MMO games but want to get in on the action all you need to do is head over to steam or their website.  Developers promise that Forge will not be pay-to-win and supported by cosmetic items. So to get better the only option is to level your champion which allows for more flexibility in how you want to upgrade (more like side-grade) your character.

3. Dead Island Epidemic (MOBA)

Yet another moba. (yawn) which might be able to deliver on the promise of significantly changing the dynamic of the 5v5 map by (drum rolls please….) throwing in zombies. The cliche aside, the zombies will act as a random neutral faction that will force opposing players to work together in certain scenarios in a map with ever-changing objectives. Whether they can deliver on this or is it another MOBA with zombies is yet to be seen. Official Website.

5. Bye bye Battleforge

After 4 years since launch EA has decided to shut down its card based RTS. The announcement left players unhappy due to a lack of player reimbursement system for fans that still have their virtual currency saved up. The move was not all that surprising since the game did not receive any major updates recently.  Services seize Oct 31. It was one of the first few US triple-A titles to go free.
For those looking for a new card based games I recommend Scrolls (from the creators of Minecraft).

8. Strife (MOBA)

The game from  the developers of Heroes of Newerth aims to reduce player toxicity by resource sharing mechanics like half the gold being split between your lane mate or the entire team ensure that even the weakest players gets enough gold to be competitive. Progression on the meta level allows you to level up items and every player has companions that act as passive buffs. Couriers allow more time to be  spent on the battlefield and less time running back to base. Check out their free comic preview here.

9. Smashmuck Champions (MOBA)

Like Strife, SmashMuck Champions is another more casual approach to the MOBA genre focusing more on action than items or farming. The game is available on Early Access on Steam. The game allows up to ten players in one of five Game Types with each arena’s environment being interactive opening up many new levels of strategic gameplay mechanics.

About me: A collector, I hunt for stuff that was missed. I’m the guy who goes into a music store and asks the staff if they have some secret music cd in the backroom storage closet. My life ticks away while I watch anime, reading fictional novels or stalk Wikipedia for information completely useless to me.
