Its Gamescom time!
Gamescom is Europe’s answer to America’s E3, celebrating video games, in as big as a way as possible. The 2011 version of Gamescom is being held in Cologne (or as the Krauts call it, Koln), Germany and has a lot to offer and to satisfy us gamers’ appetites. I did spend a week in Cologne last year and I must say I totally fell in love with that city. It has a great vibe, and looks absolutely beautiful and serene during fall season. Cologne is a ‘student city’, and the Gamescom authorities couldn’t have selected a better location.
Lots of things are happening at Gamescom, and this write-up is mainly a brief up on whats up and whats big.
DOTA 2 is one of the highlights of Gamescom 2011. I’ve already been speaking quite a lot about DOTA 2 in my blog, thats because I am a serious DOTA player and I enjoy the game for its competitiveness, strategy, and sheer fun. What makes DOTA 2 so special is that it is being developed by Valve.
Now, as you are already aware of, DOTA is something like an extension to Warcraft III, which is a Blizzard game, and Blizzard, hands down, is my favorite game developer. And, I’m also a huge fan of Valve. They’ve made some of the best games ever (Portal, Halflife 2, Counter Strike etc), so thus, DOTA 2 is something like a combination of both Valve and Blizzard, its the best of both worlds, and thus I’m super excited.
Valve made a huge announcement by saying that it is going to host a DOTA 2 tournament during Gamescom 2011, and the winner gets $1,000,000 cash as prize money. Now that is pretty cool and a killer way to unveil a new game. Valve are really taking it to the next level. Here is the DotA 2 trailer shown in Gamescom:Please enter the url to a YouTube video.
ELECTRONIC ARTS SHOWCASE
EA is also making headlines with latest updates, screenshots and videos of Mass Effect 3, and will finally announce the release date of Star Wars : The Old Republic. I’m not that excited about Mass Effect 3 because honestly, I hated Mass Effect 2. It had nothing new to offer. No new gameplay mechanics and playing ME2 was like replaying a dozen of RPGs I played before Mass Effect 2.
About Star Wars : The Old Republic, yes, I’m excited, being an ardent fan of the Star Wars : KOTOR series, and looking at the screen shots of The Old Republic. It looks pretty sleek, and coupled with the amazing storyline of Star Wars, I’m sure the game is gonna be great.
EA is also revealing Need For Speed : The Run, the next installment of NFS : Shift 2. NFS : The Run is not your typical driving sim like the Colin McRae Dirt and Grid series, rather, its more like a single player driving adventure sim. I’m not a fan of the NFS series either. I only enjoyed the first few games of the NFS franchise, the rest were all shallow games with nothing deep, and were terribly easy.
I’m really hoping EA does something special with NFS The Run. The quality of the series has been deteriorating exponentially, where once it was considered a top notch sim. The screenshots look good. The cars are designed well and race tracks look challenging. We’ll have to wait till the game releases to really see whether EA is really concerned about rejuvinating its Need For Speed franchise.
Watch out for more Gamescon updates to follow.
