Everyone’s running dry with a huge appetite system these days, so why blame a poor frog who wants to break the cycle, spin the Darwinian concept and smack on some human food?! From the land that buys a thousand games a year comes this one-of-a-kind game that will make you ‘jump and leap with joy’. Baka is a relentlessly puzzling and cleverly testing platformer’s game that brings back the best of Ice Climber (if you’ve played your 8Bit games you’ll know this) and Kermit the frog, and even then, it spits on the philosophical side of virtual gaming with a different smack altogether. Below are characters from Baka.

ILLGaming caught up with the creators of this Platformer Climber Game (that is yet to hit the market) amidst all the Next Gen titan clash and got a few words out that will not only satisfy platformer fans but intrigue a whole generation of Triple A Button Mashers. Toonheart Studios, the gang that brought this game to life form, says that the earliest inspirations for Baka the frog was from the depths of Jap phenomenon – Naruto. Baka in Japanese means ‘crazy’. And the game speed of Baka totally justifies the creator’s given name.

The story of Baka is relate-able. When we get bored of what’s served at home, you give-in and submit to the large pizza that just got delivered. Baka has a huge craving for what is human food, the delicacies that are completely ‘out of his league’. And when a badass owner of a confectionery store hires thugs from the animal kingdom to make Baka fall, that’s when his journey starts. Baka is hitting major devices and platforms including – Blackberry, iOS, Android and Tizen. It is dated for release early next year, i.e. 2014.

Baka’s journey to the higher levels is beautifully imagined with loads of candies, sweets, along with competitive enemies and fascinating allies. It is a pure fun based game that gets even better as you run up the levels. I played Baka during my interview with Toonheart in NASSCOM GDC Pune, and I completely loved it. Primarily because:

  • Every character that you meet is so uniquely different from each other, including the likes of Spiky Octopy and Boxer Rooster
  • Over 150 types of food for Baka to smack on
  • Crazy Achievements and Trophies
  • Mind Blowing Secret Creatures (If you are a lover of PVZ this is your cue)
  • And Quite Epic Platformers Kind Boss Fights

Speaking exclusively to ILLGaming, the maestros at Toonheart revealed a unicorn character that Baka the frog can ride as he proceeds with the game. A frog riding a mythical legend, spurring my brain left and right! Toonheart comprises of the brain, Srikrishna Das or ‘Krish’ as his mates call, who kicked the roles of system administrator and white hat hacker in order to create games. His roles at the studio include Game Design, Art Direction, Background Artist, Marketing and Programing, besides this guy is a bike fanatic, or a bike baka! Ramesh is the coder behind this mega eating episode, who boasts of less talking and more action. When he’s not developing games, he’s either musing over contemporary dance forms or flirting with cosplayers. K. Gauthama Buddha is the lead on concept art and character design. His artsy superpowers reflect much in the variety of allies and villains he’s created for Baka. Raul Fernandez is Baka’s man in music and sound effects, and if you ask me, the game practically nails the SFX bit! His music is borrowed from Santo Domingo, the Caribbeans.

If your wish this Christmas is to stop the ageing effect and grow back into a kid, then Santa has heard you. This simple Platformers game will be your way back into the fun of being just dodging enemies, leaping across edges, charging yourself with temporary super froggy powers and meeting strange bosses. The game detects your huge crush on challenging video games and suitably justifies your greed with more and more hurdles in your path, needless to say, this is no ordinary climber’s game. When the year 2014 opens, greet Baka on your platform and prepare to get dazzled by an Indie game that will surely make this nation edge even closer to building global scale video games.
