The new Rajnikanth starrer Kochadaiiyaan comes with not one but two promotional games that tie in with the movie which were recently released for iOS, Android and the Windows App stores. These games are based on generic game ideas like the infinite runner and the gallery shooter and are developed by Vroovy which is a collaboration between Gameshastra and Hungama. We played through both games on Windows PC and Android and our impressions are as follows.

As the name suggests, Kingdom Run is an infinite runner featuring Rajnikanth as Kochadaiiyaan who must traverse various obstacles, shoot arrows at barrels, collect coins and defeat guards blocking his path. There are also two special moves to take down the guards.

Even if its a game, Rajinikanth plays YOU.

The game offers some powerups like Invincibility against obstacles, Extra life, a couple of armour upgrades and a bow upgrade. None of these actually seem to work in practice so you may want to hold off on availing the microtransactions on offer. Upgrades are purchased by spending coins, of which each level offers a measly amount. The game only has 3 lives and you must start right from the beginning if you lose them all or run out of money to pay the hefty revival fees. When playing on the phone, you might want to turn the internet off so as not to be bombarded with ads after every action.

This game is quite buggy and a curious thing we noticed was that it would rarely switch between the two guard types on the test systems. While the Android version seemed to have only spearmen, the Windows version had only axemen blocking our path. The game supposedly supports combos but we didn’t ever see that in action.

The graphics look okay on a phone but on a PC they look rather horrible. The character model is quite well done though animations seem jerky and don’t flow smoothly. Another bug we ran into was that the game would not mute some sound effects despite disabling the option from the menu. The background score is quite nice to listen to though sound effects aren’t quite up to par.

The game looks rather like an unfinished low effort venture which wants to merely cash in on the hype surrounding the movie. It can offer a few hours worth of entertainment before the excessive advertising or the limitation of 3 lives gets to you.
