Games can be very complicated and even the most simple games gain in the learning curve with enough time, My mother always felt uncomfortable with this until I found a solution. Mystic Marbles is a blitz style match-3 game with “drag’n drop” gameplay mechanic, Facebook leaderboards and a local multiplayer mode for 2-4 players on one tablet / phone. Available on all major mobile platforms (Windows Phone, Android, iOS) this is a simple game that succeeds in simplifying the match 3 genre. I am surprised myself at this feat but apparently that was all the push needed for many in my family to keep the tablet charged.

The gameplay follows finding 2 similar gems and then separate them, this adds a gem in the middle to make a match and that’s it. The game is focus on a score model where the only objective is to do better and get a better score. To keep you interested gems are given at the end of each round based on your performance, some small missions and combo (every time you make a match both horizontally and vertically in one move). These can be used either at the end of the 60 sec timed matches to get more time or to buy items that multiply your match score. There is some sense of progression though which is handled by using player levels. The more you play the more your player levels giving you access to some items in the shop mentions earlier. Everything is passive and hence make for a very simple gameplay.

Micro transactions involve getting gems that allow you to buy said multiplier, also these gems can be used to extend the game time by a few more seconds to allow for that slightly higher score. The local multiplayer is handy on a large screen and this family-friendly game has more mileage than it first leads on. Yes, it is derivative and won’t hold your attention for long, but there aren’t many games that I know that my mother can understand and enjoy.[divider]

About me: A collector, I hunt for stuff that was missed. I’m the guy who goes into a music store and asks the staff if they have some secret music cd in the backroom storage closet. My life ticks away while I watch anime, reading fictional novels or stalk Wikipedia for information completely useless to me.
