No More Room in Hell

A free game for the horror fans (Half-Life 2 Mod)[divider]

Intro:

“When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.”

Quoted from dawn of the dead the game pays tribute to the movie. Built on modified Source Engine No More Room in Hell is a co-operative realistic first person survival horror. Having won multiple awards like PC Gamer’s Mod of the Year 2011, ModDB’s Editor Choice Multiplayer Mod of the Year 2011) the mod was founded in 2003. With a new team taking over the game in 2009. The first playable beta was released on Halloween of 2011 and now we have the final release. The main plot is set in a time where the human civilization is on the verge of collapsing from a disease of unknown origin, turning people into zombies. There’s no known cure. There are a handful of uninfected survivors left and with co-operation and teamwork, you may live long enough to fight your way to salvation.

Gameplay:

The game features Co-operative play with up to eight players. With a dynamic communication system where players cannot hear you over the game if your characters are far away. This is an online only game, meaning that a disconnection could end the game.

There are two gamemodes currently. In Objective mode, the survivors must complete a series of objectives that will allow them to be rescued. Dynamic Objective Maps that change with each playthrough. Another game mode, survival, is a wave-based survival run with supply drops and safe zones to maintain. You defend and maintain your shelter against the undead while waiting to get extracted to a safe area. While it sounds somewhat similar to left 4 dead, the pacing and the survival element make it a much more realistic simulator rather than an arcadey shooter. The lack of variety in the maps and game modes may be a concern for the longevity of the game but new maps and modes are promised.

The difficulty/simulation is attained by eliminating conveniences like crosshairs and with a very limited and optional HUD. The gameplay is based around survival with Firearms and ammunition are limited in availability, taking the gameplay back to the more old school dynamics for horror games. Piece of advice from the game devs: aim down your sights and shoot for the head! Flashlight is almost as valuable as the ammo and zombies are tough to put down. You might just want to run past them if you can and not engage. Eventually thought you will learn the weakness of the maps as you play them losing some of the tension. Now I did notice some zombie respawning randomly in wired locations nearby but as with most mods it is somewhat buggy at the moment.
