Titanfall Beta, which was released to the public last month, ran at 792p on the Xbox One, and we said to ourselves “its cool, the final version’s gonna be better,” and we moved on. We were hopeful because Respawn Community Manager Abbie Heppe claimed that final build of the game would run at at a native resolution of 900p.

Was it wrong on our part to expect a ‘next-gen’ console to run a game at a meagre 1080p? Obviously we were, but still, 900p was a bargain that we’d happily accept. Anything above 720p (or 792p), please.

Turns out, that clearly ain’t the case.

Many publications have started reporting that the final Titanfall Xbox One build also runs at 792p native, upscaled to 1080p. And here we are, sitting with our controllers in our hands thinking, “Is this next-gen? Let’s buy a PC. YOLO.”

titanfall 792p

For those who hadn’t noticed, yes, 792p is higher than the archaic 720p, but let me tell you, the difference is minimal. A games that runs natively at 1080p looks much crisp and detailed.

Us consumers are sheep, after all, so we’d still trust Respawn for improving things. Lead engineer Richard Baker spoke to Eurogamer, is clearly a step ahead of us, as he claimed that they were still exploring the possibility of upping the resolution, thus ‘reinforcing’ our trust. Thank you, oh dear developer.

But then again, issues that Respawn is dealing with clearly highlight how weak the Xbox One’s hardware is. It’s 2014 and they’re still deciding whether to go for 1080p without Anti-aliasing or 900p with FXAA. LOL. I’ve been anti-aliasising the fuck out of my PC games at 1080p (or more) since the last three years. I rock a GTX Titan for those who care.

“We’ve been experimenting with making it higher and lower. One of the big tricks is how much ESRAM we’re going to use, so we’re thinking of not using hardware MSAA and instead using FXAA to make it so we don’t have to have this larger render target,” Baker told Eurogamer.

“We’re going to experiment. The target is either 1080p non-anti-aliased or 900p with FXAA. We’re trying to optimise… we don’t want to give up anything for higher res. So far we’re not 100 per cent happy with any of the options, we’re still working on it. For day one it’s not going to change. We’re still looking at it for post-day one. We’re likely to increase resolution after we ship.”

All I have to say is, well played, next-gen, bloody well played.

Oh, and more thing, how will Titanfall run on the Xbox 360? Hope, hope and only hope.
