And yet another Top list, sigh. But bear with us this time, please. I went to the movie theatre yesterday and had to bear through yet another crappy Bollywood movie. The same night, I returned home and almost immediately started to play Deus Ex: Nihilum, Nihilum being the latest major community developed mod for the classic game. After a good two hour session, it hit me that a Deus Ex movie would be so darn nice. And then yada yada yada, I start making a list of other games that deserve having movies made based on them. So here we go:
1. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Whatever they might say about GTA 3 and GTA: Vice City, or whatever they might make you believe, it was GTA: San Andreas, the ghetto-hero Carl Johnson’s saga, that kept me the engrossed the most. Everything about GTA: San Andreas was interesting, relatable, adventurous and entertaining, the key elements to a good movie. It’s got a stereotypical story, but I don’t mind that, really. As long as its thrilling, and that’s what the game is, a thrill. And gangster movies are always fun, they’re my favourite kind. In-game characters such as OG Loc, Big Smoke, can make commendable acting performances out of good actors. Throw in a Samuel L. Jackson and a Will Smith here and there, and we have a blockbuster movie as big as the game itself.
2. The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings
On a darker note, we have Geralt, the White Wolf, our hero of the film adaptation of The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings. This would an R-rated movie for sure. The game represents a fantasy world, filled with dark characters, witches, monsters, kings, queens, sadism, masochism etc., and to top it off, all this comes with a hint of gritty, dark drama. It would interesting to see who plays Triss Merigold, she was No. 2 on Most Beautiful Gaming Characters list. Peter Jackson would be ideal director for a movie like this, considering the work he did on the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
3. Far Cry 3
Another great game that deserves an equally great adaption. Vaas is an iconic psychopathic villain, and if portrayed well on the silver screen, can earn many accolades. Michael Mando, the actor who the original Vaas can be a suitable candidate. The basic plot of the movie is one that has been done to death by American cinema i.e. group of high school / university friends head off to an island, and something goes wrong, but Far Cry 3 is much bigger in scope. There’s the people of the island, the Rakyat, and Citra. I get the chills when I imagine a real person playing Citra.
4. Half-life 2
Survivalist movies are fun. Especially if it involves the elusive and mysterious Gordon Freeman and his supposed sidekick (rumoured: girlfriend) Alyx Vance. Set in City 17 (somewhere in Eastern Europe) in future earth, a Half-Life 2 movie would be a great way to pay homage to a great game. And obviously, would be a great movie in itself. Fight sequences amongst the Combine and Freeman Co. would be a treat to watch. And top it off with the gripping storyline the Half-Life series provides. PS: We’re waiting for a Half-Life 3 announcement.
5. Bioshock
Bioshock, the first, is one of the best games I’ve ever played. This game is ‘up-there’. I mean obviously the storyline was out-of-the-world awesome. A city based underwater with its inhabitants set on a leash by these ‘performance enhancing’ plasmids; how insane is that! Bioshock wreaks of insanity. Even the little sisters, the big daddies, Fontaine the villain, and overall the general set-and-setting. Rupture is literally a ‘mad world.’ And a movie based on that? Yes, why not? The first person who comes to my mind as the best person to direct this movie is Stanley Kubrick (may his soul rest in peace). Kubrick keeps it insane, it’s his signature and it comes naturally to him. He’s made A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, just to name a few of his insane but great pieces of art.
6. Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
This pick was a no brainer. It’s always fun to watch powerful men slaughter millions in the name of their country. This game would make for a cheesy, spicy, dramatised plot. There had to one of the Red Alerts on our list. Remember those amazing video clips that played before and after a mission? It was funny how EA dramatised the entire thing, from the Chinese to the Russians to the Americans. This is stereotypical-ism at its height. I remember the Vice-President of the United States was played by that guy from Baywatch. That’s enough of a lulfactor for me. And then there was Jenny McCarthy playing Tanya. I still remember the chills I got seeing the final video of the Allied campaign, where Tanya removes her gown. Haha! Think Michael Bay would do good justice to this movie, considering his over-the-top style. Watch this video below to relive the Tanya awesomeness:
