What happens when the superhero the world trusts the most turns evil, when all the villains get a new mega powerful leader? That is the path this game takes, how will this saga end is a thing to play for. “Injustice: Gods Among US” launches the almighty ‘Superman’ in a negative role. Sure we have read about Superman going all evil in the comic books, but this is the first time a video game brings forward the new super villain.
The storyline created in collaboration between NetherRealm Studios, DC Entertainment, and writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, promises to be an enthralling mix of strength, style, drama, superpowers and gadgetry. There is not much info on the story yet, all we know is that after the destruction of Metropolis and the deaths of Lois Lane and their unborn child, Superman establishes a new world order, causing heroes to stand in opposition to each other. A battle ensues between the forces of Superman’s regime and those allied with Batman’s rebellion, with the Dark Knight being the good guy. The storyline is told in a “Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe” way, with fighting being a necessary part to progress through the levels.
The gameplay is Mortal Kombat (2011) style one vs one on a 2D plane with characters and background rendered in 3D. The fights consist of one round and each player has two health bars, moves and attacks are mostly guided by the 4 button controller setup for light, medium and heavy attacks + a fourth button as character trait, which unleashes the primary individual skill of each hero. The interesting part however is the use of any object available at your disposal as a weapon, and that too by using your skill or gadget depending on the hero. So there will be full use of cars, rods, trash cans etc to devour the enemy. To add to all that there is the much obvious super meter to perform special attacks, the meter fills by combos or by being attacked, but the twist is that a player can steal the power from his opponents super meter. Can’t really imagine how Batman can win against Superman, but the game will come with certain counter and defensive measures which will allow less loaded heroes to match with the technically/physically superior ones.
Several game modes are available with campaign mode explaining the plot, along with 2P online practice mode and King of the Hill, in which up to 8 players battle each other turn wise. The game comes loaded with tons of avatars and other unlockables, which are earned by gaining experience and increasing your level.
The game is made on a modified Unreal Engine 3, promising superior graphics with amazing characters and environment. The backgrounds as mentioned earlier would be real than ever, heroes would be able to use different objects and the backdrop itself, for e.g. throw opponents off the cliff type events. Three confirmed backgrounds are the Batcave, Watchtower, and the Fortress of Solitude.
Many famous heroes and villains have been picked for the game and some may even feel a void for heroes which were ignored or skipped for now atleast. A special mention goes to the ‘Harley Quinn’ modeling, looking hot, and we know Wonder Woman was always there. Heroes available to fight are fixed and several unplayable characters from the DC universe will contribute to the storyline. The heroes and villains of the game are given below, though not in any particular order.
- Aquaman
- Bane
- Batman
- Catwoman
- Cyborg
- Deathstroke
- Flash
- Green Arrow
- Green Lantern
- Harley Quinn
- Joker
- Lex Luthor
- Nightwing
- Shazam
- Solomon Grundy
- Superman
- Wonder Woman
With this collection of superpowers available to use, we are sure this game will attract a lot of interest and attention. To know the build up to the present story check out the comic book series by the same name, released on 15 January, 2013.
