From 2005-13, we’ve seen and assisted in the fall of Olympus, we’ve slain the Titans and the Gods along with it. Pandora’s Box has been opened twice and we know what’s inside. So what was the next offering in the path of the God of War saga? Surely there wasn’t any Greek gods left to be beaten. Well, here’s to remove the cloud of confusion from your minds, the next God of War will be casted right here, in India. Todd Pappy, who took the lead in the Creative Front in the series, with the latest God of War: Ascension, was spotted at the Playstation 4 Business meet last night. On being confronted with a couple of interviewers, what he said was somewhat like this:
“We, at Santa Monica, always want to be ahead of the curve. We have done that in God of War: Ascension with the inclusion of the Gladiator themed Multiplayer sessions. But the islands of Greece have become familiar to our audience. We want to rise up and change it again, reshape it if necessary.”
He was directly aiming at the next installation, but it took quite a deal of enquiry before he spelt it out:
“The next God of War will be in a different timeline, and a completely different story of vengeance and will power. Chew on this, the next God of War will be forged in the Indian Mythology. Indian traditions have triggered us a lot, as we were brainstorming a year back on the plan ahead. It was a unanimous vote from the guys who lead the script and direction that the next God of War will rise from the Himalayas.”
So what are we to take from this? Is the next God of War about an Indian commoner who defiles the godly traditions and claims his vengeance? Or is it about the great battles between the Gods and the Asuras that we Indians are well acquainted with? Will the next God of War have chakras and dhanush as the major focus? Will it have mind boggling sessions inside chakravyuhs (labyrinths)? The creative team must be having a monstrous gut feeling about this. They are letting go of one of the greatest video game characters in the history, for the sake of a wind of change.
There are a lot of questions that need to be answered. How will Santa Monica get into the aesthetics and architecture of an ancient India with the Mount Kailash standing tall. What are the elements that the gamers will use or indulge in, while they are on the way to conquering greatness? Are we going to beat fictional beasts like Ghatotkach and Garuda? But the most important question of them all, who will be the replacement for Kratos? Indra, Vishnu, Shiva or is it a common Indian? While this next God of War takes another 4 to develop, may we all wait until then, with loads of hopes and dreams.
