With the Xbox One India launch looming close (23 September, 2014), we take this time to find out what consumers really feel about the Xbox One official pricing.
Back in June, Microsoft India announced the Xbox One’s official pricing for India. The basic version (no Kinect, no bundled games, single controller) will cost ₹39,990 ($655). The Kinect version will sell for ₹45,990 ($755).
In contrary, the Xbox One costs $400 without the Kinect and $500 with the Kinect in the US, and roughly the same in Europe. That’s makes the Indian prices a whopping 50% higher than its Western counterparts. China has received the same treatment, and it wasn’t received well by gamers in the region, Gamesinasia reports.
In addition to purchasing to the console, add ₹5,000 for an extra controller, ₹7,000 for two games and ₹3,400 for annual Xbox Gold subscription, that makes the initial ownership cost a whopping ₹55,000. Does this price seem justifiable?
To make matters worse, Microsoft recently told retailers in India to remove their Xbox One preorder listings. The PS4, which launched in the country earlier this year, retails at the same price, but continues to sell strong. Xbox faces a bigger challenge than the PS4. The PlayStation brand has a wider reach in the country and has been around for a longer time.
Cheaper alternatives
If you’re looking for a cheaper Xbox One, your best bet is to pick it up from the grey market or from the UAE, but then you miss out on the warranty. While you might save a considerable amount, a bricked console means you’re stranded and have no place to go. In Palika Bazaar (New Delhi), an import Kinect-less Xbox One will cost you around ₹34,000. Lower prices have been reported from other sources.
