PC gamers are left with barely any options when it comes to good PC game controllers. The obvious choice remains the Xbox 360 controller for Windows, even with its fundamental design flaws. I have purchased and replaced 4 Xbox 360 controllers in the past 3 years. Logitech’s offerings are good, but their limited out-of-the-box support for games is hurting.
Having said that, the PlayStation 4’s DualShock 4 controller will have compatibility with Windows PCs out of the box, only for “basic functions” though, as confirmed by Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment on Twitter. It is still unclear as to what Yoshida means by “basic functions.”
Yoshida was asked on Twitter whether Sony would release a driver for the DualShock 4 to make it compatible with Windows PCs, and he tweeted back, “the analog sticks and buttons will work just fine.”
It is still unclear whether Windows will recognize the DualShock 4 as a DualShock 4, since many non-Microsoft controllers register to the computer as an Xbox controller due to the XInput API. The DualShock 3 (the PS3 controller) lacks Xinput support, so support by the DualShock 4 should be a welcoming change. When asked if games on PC would automatically recognize the controller as a DualShock 4, Yoshida said to wait until a post-launch field report.
