The rumours have been floating around in the preceding weeks about AMD being on the verge of announcing three new processors in the Ryzen 3000 family following the XT name. Well, the rumours, for a change, are true. AMD has just announced three new Ryzen 3000 processors, all of them ending with an “XT” suffix. These processors are the Ryzen 9 3900XT, Ryzen 7 3800XT and Ryzen 5 3600XT.
Coinciding the announcement of the AMD Ryzen XT CPUs is the official worldwide availability of the AMD B550 chipset, the first mainstream chipset to support PCIe 4.0. Additionally, AMD has also announced the A520 chipset for socket AM4 and 3rd Gen Ryzen processors.
What’s new in the AMD Ryzen 3000XT Family
The new 3000XT range of CPUs focuses primarily on boosting the turbo frequency by 100-200 MHz, mainly due to optimized 7nm manufacturing process, as claimed by AMD. Base frequencies haven’t changed much though. Each of the new XT processors are now the highest variant in their respective classes i.e. Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9.
MODEL | CORES/THREADS | BOOST/ BASE FREQUENCY (GHZ) | TOTAL CACHE (MB) | TDP (WATTS) | Platform | SEP (USD) | EXPECTED AVAILABILITY |
AMD Ryzen™ 9 3900XT | 12/24 | Up to 4.7/3.8 | 70 | 105 | AM4 | $499 | July 7, 2020 |
AMD Ryzen™ 7 3800XT | 8/16 | Up to 4.7/3.9 | 36 | 105 | AM4 | $399 | July 7, 2020 |
AMD Ryzen™ 5 3600XT | 6/12 | Up to 4.5/3.8 | 35 | 95 | AM4 | $249 | July 7, 2020 |
The Ryzen 9 3900XT is now the top performing CPU in the Ryzen lineup. It offers a +100 MHz turbo over the 3900X, for the same official price as the 3900X. The 3800XT offers +200 MHz on the turbo frequency for the same price of the 3800X. Parallelly, the 3600XT offers a +100 MHz boost over the 3600X, for the same price.
Thus, this clearly points to a official permanent price drop for the 3900X, 3800X and the 3600X. We just need to wait for an official announcement by AMD on that. We predict this because AMD simply cannot have the X and XT processors costing the exact same. A subtle but good move by AMD, something to make prospective buyers who’ve been waiting it out because of the lockdown.
The Ryzen 5 3600XT retail box will include a Wraith Spire cooler. For the 3800XT and 3900XT, AMD is recommending “the use of an AIO solution with a minimum of 280mm radiation of equivalent air cooling.” AMD has shared a list of recommended coolers, found on AMD.com.
The new processors will supports all Zen 2 based Ryzen 3000 supporting motherboards, so that’s some relieving news for people who were worried about chipset support.
New A520 Chipset
The XT CPUs weren’t the only announcement by AMD. The A520 chipset, a “budget” variant of the B550 chipset was also announced. The A520 will replace the current A320, and will support the Ryzen 3000XT.
