A couple of hours after it was leaked across the internet, Activision went ahead to officially reveal the trailer for the next instalment of the world’s highest selling video games franchise, Call of Duty. The initial reveal was planned for May 4th.
The new game takes the name Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and the headlining feature is the presence of Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey in the single player campaign. Advanced Warfare is the 11th instalment to the series, the previous one being Call of Duty: Ghosts, which didn’t perform commercially as well as Activision had expected it to. Ghosts, developed by Infinity Ward was also not taken positively by critics alike. We gave it a miser 3 on 10, since they game lacked any form or innovation whatsoever.
Advanced Warfare is being developed by Sledgehammer and has been in development since three years. This is Sledgehammer’s AAA debut. The game will be a next-gen only game, releasing on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The pressure to perform on Sledgehammer is high, as Call of Duty games by default command (read: expect) big revenues.
From the looks of the trailer, the game seems pretty generic. I am curious as to what the next COD game will offer, as the genre is painfully saturated. One thing is clear, the performance of Advanced Warfare will reflect whether the series can carry on or not.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare releases on 4th November.
