As the base model in MSI’s MAG 321 series, it utilizes the same impressive QD-OLED panel as its more expensive counterparts, offering just enough to make it a compelling choice. This is one of the most affordable 4K OLED monitors available right now, and is a serious contender as your first ever OLED monitor.

The MSI 321UP (and all models in the family) incorporates a custom passive cooling solution using a graphene film. This translates to approximately 30% greater clarity, making it ideal for detailed work and immersive gaming. The increased screen real estate allows for a more expansive and detailed view, whether you’re exploring vast game worlds or working on complex creative projects.

Furthermore, the 32-inch form factor allows for comfortable side-by-side multitasking with two windows open, providing ample screen real estate for productivity tasks. This is particularly beneficial for users who frequently work with multiple applications or documents simultaneously. Even if you need to lower the in-game resolution to 1440p to achieve higher frame rates, the image still looks perfectly acceptable on this display. The 321UP supports a standard brightness of 400 nits and a peak brightness of 1000 nits. However, it’s worth noting that the monitor defaults to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) mode with a maximum brightness of 400 nits. To unlock the full potential of the display, users need to manually enable the HDR 1000-nit preset in the OSD menu. This is a somewhat unusual default setting, as it prevents users from experiencing the full HDR capabilities of the monitor out of the box.

In tests with a Klein A-10A colorimeter, a Murideo Six-G signal generator, and Calman monitor calibration software, the MAG 321UP achieved an average SDR brightness of 245 nits and an impressive 1010 nits in HDR mode. These results compare favorably to competing QD-OLED monitors like the Alienware AW3225QF (232 nits) and the ROG Swift PG32UCDM (197 nits). The high peak brightness is particularly beneficial for HDR content, as it allows for more realistic and impactful highlights.

The contrast ratio of the MAG 321UP, rated at 1,500,000:1, is exceptionally high, as is the case with OLED panels. This is a testament to the true black levels achievable with OLED technology, where individual pixels can be completely turned off. In comparison, IPS panels typically have contrast ratios in the range of 1000:1 to 3000:1. The high contrast ratio of the 321UP contributes to incredible image depth and realism, with details clearly visible in both dark and bright areas of the screen.

While the glossy panel features an anti-reflective coating, it can still be susceptible to reflections in bright environments, particularly if the light source is directly in front of the display. In such situations, blacks may appear slightly grayish, and colors may lose some of their vibrancy. Therefore, it’s recommended to use this monitor in a moderately lit environment with light sources positioned behind the display. This is a common trade-off with glossy displays, as they tend to offer more vibrant colors and deeper blacks compared to matte displays, but are more prone to reflections.

It’s worth mentioning that the MAG 321UP does not support Dolby Vision HDR. However, this is unlikely to be a dealbreaker for most users, as HDR10 content still looks stunning on this display. Let’s be realistic: even the latest GPUs, like Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5000 series, struggle to consistently hit 120fps at 4K resolution with Ray Tracing enabled in demanding AAA games. For immersive AAA gaming experiences, the 165Hz refresh rate of the 321UP is more than sufficient. If your focus is competitive esports titles like CS:2, Fortnite, or Dota 2, where frame rates can exceed 200fps, then the 240Hz models may be worth considering.

Additionally, do you really need a KVM switch?
