It’s a celebration day for gamers and tech enthusiasts today as NVIDIA have unveiled their new flagship GPUs, the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080, along with Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 3. DLSS 3.0 will be able to able to deliver 4x performance with its AI-powered technology. It will give way to a new era of the way games and applications run. Nvidia’s RTX 40 series will support DLSS 3 by default.

DLSS 3 – Massive improvements over previous generation

DLSS 3 will enhance the overall experience of the gamer by amplifying the image resolution with its AI-accelerated super-resolution techniques with up to 4x better performance (claimed) while rendering, as well as speedy responses. It has already gained a momentum and received support from the gaming circle with 35 games and applications being integrated with this technology.

DLSS 3 is another quantum leap for gamers and creators,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA.

Along with this technology, NVIDIA also announced the release of its new GeForce RTX 40 series GPUs at GeForce Beyond: Special Broadcast at GTC.

Is DLSS 3 the real performance multiplier?

Since the image quality while playing any game stay on priority for gamers, the capacity to put it in practice has been made available by NVIDIA. Combining the ray tracing and AI capabilities will only create an immersive experience, in addition to increasing the overall performance of the applications.

NVIDIA’s DLSS 3, powered by new fourth-generation Tensor Cores and a new Optical Flow Accelerator on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs offers a new feature called as the Optical Multi Frame Generation. Optical Multi Frame Generation creates new frames instead of pixels, boosting performance. The new Optical Flow Accelerator in the NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture looks at two consecutive in-game images and calculates motion vector data for objects and elements that appear in the frame but aren’t modelled by traditional game engine motion vectors. This helps in enhancing the look and feel of any designs like particles, reflections, shadows, and lighting when it’s rendered by AI.

Super-resolution game frames are then combined with engine and optical flow motion vectors, input into a convolutional neural network, which evaluates the data and creates an extra frame for each game-rendered frame. Combining DLSS-generated frames with DLSS super-resolution frames allows DLSS 3 to recreate 7/8 of the shown pixels using AI, improving frame speeds by up to 4x.

Since DLSS Frame Generation is a GPU post-process, it can enhance frame rates even when the CPU is bottlenecked. For CPU-limited games, like physics-heavy or large-world games, DLSS 3 enables GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs to render the game at up to double the frame rate.

On top of it, DLSS 3 also integrates NVIDIA Reflex that combines GPU and CPU synchronizations to offer optimum responsiveness and low system latency.

Upcoming Games that Support DLSS 3.0

As DLSS 3 is designed as an upgrade from DLSS 2, devs can simply enable it in the games that are already compatible with DLSS 2 or NVIDIA Streamline.
