Sony today announced that it has sold over 6 million (60 lakh) PlayStation 4 units as of March 2, 2014, well ahead of its fiscal year sales target which was set at 5 million, Reuters reports. Whats more, the fiscal year still has about 25 days left.
It is worthy to add that the PS4 is still marred by an inconsistent supply chain, as availability of the product has been limited internationally.
Sony launched the PS4 in the US in November, 2013, and has since moved on to other parts of the world. India got the PS4 on January 6th, while Japan, Sony’s home market, saw the PS4 launch just recently, on the 22nd of February.
The PS4 has performed way better than the PS3, which had sold only 3.68 units in the same duration. Sony had expected to sell 6 million PS3 units by fiscal year March 2007, so it missed its targets by a big margin. Luckily for the company, the same is not the case now, as they have sold 20% more than projected in their sales targets.
The PlayStation 4’s success is critical to Sony’s fate as an electronics company. Sony recently exited the PC market by selling its Vaio business to Japan Industrial Partners in February. Sony’s Bravia TV business has been converted into a subsidiary company, and Sony laid-off some 10,000 people from its global workforce last year.
