The PS4 is coming to India on the 6th of January, 2014 and will cost Rs 39,990. Countless Indians are divided on whether they should buy the PS4 now or wait for later, or whether they need a PS4 at all. There’s even the much awaited announcement of the Xbox One. We prepare a set of questions that is relevant to the needs of the reader and try to answer them pragmatically.

I already own a PS3, should I still buy the PS4?

You shouldn’t. First of all, there are plenty of great PS3 games you can play, and the PS3 is here to stay for a while. The PS3 will also continue to get new games for a while, so you’re pretty much sorted in terms of availability of games. The PS4 in contrary will have only 11 titles at launch in India, and the exclusives are just not compelling enough. We suggest you wait for the PS4 to stabilize and offer better bundles and exclusives. The complete list of games and their prices that will be available for the PS4 during launch time can be found here.

OK. So how long should I wait for?

Till we see better/newer models and bundles of the PS4. Currently there is only a 500GB model available, we’re sure Sony will introduce higher capacity models later, so there’s that. Also, wait till Sony comes up with some good exclusive games for the console. There are no mention-worthy games for the PS4 as of now. The games drive a console, and the PS4 needs to prove itself on that platform first.

I don’t own any console but I want to play the latest games. Should I buy the PS4?

Once again, the answer remains a no. You can get the PS3 at a very lucrative price, plus there are countless games available at a fraction of price of PS4 games. Also, if you really want to get into future proof gaming, a PC is the best option. With a PC, you welcome a long lasting and fulfilling relationship with video games. The personal computer, through the client Steam offers the largest library of great games, and they cost cheaper than their console counterparts too.

I want to buy a next-gen console, I’m confused between a PS4 and an Xbox One. What should I buy?

First of all, the Xbox One has not been announced for India yet. Second, the Xbox One is not a suitable product for India because of its internet connection requirements and TV features which are not supported in India, atleast for now. So a PS4 is a much better option in India, add to that Sony’s better support and distribution network in the country. If you really want a next-gen console, the PS4 is the way to go.

How much will I have to pay for the PS4 initially?

The console costs Rs 39,990, but it comes with only one controller and misses the PS4 camera. Both cost roughly Rs 5,000 each, so you can add Rs. 10,000 to the console cost. PS4 games cost anywhere between Rs 3,500 to 4,500, so buying three games would mean a total of Rs 12,000 or more. Add all that up and your initial cost becomes about Rs 65,000, which is a sizable expenditure. The same amount of money can get you a PC more powerful than the PS4, plus of a bunch of games. So wait up. If you really can’t, the PS3 is still a good option. A PC, even more so.

About me: A collector, I hunt for stuff that was missed. I’m the guy who goes into a music store and asks the staff if they have some secret music cd in the backroom storage closet. My life ticks away while I watch anime, reading fictional novels or stalk Wikipedia for information completely useless to me.
