The current emotion around the PS4 is universal, I feel. Everyone who owns the next-gen console knows that it would have been better if they had more options when it comes to games, because there aren’t many at the moment. Things might change soon, with Gamescom coming up. Remember at E3 Sony said that apart from the 2 monthly free games on PSN+, there are about 25 free to play games coming up on the PS4. We don’t know the entire list, but we do know a couple of the games on that list. These games require no purchase, you need to be connected to the internet to play them though. Here’s 7 upcoming free to play games on the PS4:

Kingdom Under Fire II

Kingdom Under Fire II
Developer: Blueside, Phantagram
Genre: Real-time-strategy, Action RPG
Release Date: mid-late 2014

Here is a game that offers proper real-time-strategy gaming on the PS4, along with multiplayer and single player campaign modes. Originally being developed as a PC game, the PS4 version was confirmed in November 2013. The game has been in development since the last 7 years. Developer Blueside was at the helm of bankruptcy in 2010, exceeding a budget of $20 million. Things came through eventually, a closed-beta test was started in the December 2011 in South Korea, and it has only been an upward curve since then.

DriveClub

DriveClub – Free Version
Developer: Evolution Studios
Genre: Racing
Release Date: 8 October, 2014

Sony pledged a ‘free to play’ version of DriveClub for PlayStation Plus subscribers, with an option to upgrade to the full version for a fee. The demo will feature lesser cars, customisations and tracks than the full version, but every gameplay feature will be accessible. PS+ members should definitely not miss this one out.

Loadout

Loadout
Developer: Edge of Reality
Genre: Third-person shooter
Release Date: TBA

Initially out on Steam in February 2014 as a free to play shooter, Loadout won over gamers with its exciting multiplayer modes, weapon customisations and well executed twists. This is by no means a free to play game made with a compromise in quality. It is a proper, full fledge shooter. No release date has been announced for the PS4 version yet, but if shooters are up your alley, this one’s a must.

Planetside 2

Planetside 2
Developer: Sony
Genre: MMO-FPS
Release Date: TBA

Now we’re talking. Again a game originally out on the PC (Nov 2012). The developers have promised that Planetside 2 will run comparable to the Ultra High graphics settings mode on the PC. The game has an overall Metacritic score of 84, and earns its large following due to great graphics, large, intense multiplayer battles and a plethora of weapons and vehicles. Being free to play is just the icing on the cake. A must play, if you ask me.

Everquest Next

Everquest Next
Developer: Sony
Genre: MMORPG
Release Date: TBA

Everquest Next is the latest instalment in the long running PC franchise, and the successor to the 2004 released Everquest II. Everquest II is known for being used by academics to study phenomena such as economic behaviour, which follows real-world patterns in terms of production and consumption. The game is immensely famous in China and South Korea. On a plot basis Everquest Next will be neither a prequel nor a sequel to its predecessors, infact it will present to players a “parallel world” of Norrath, the realm in Everquest II.

Let It Die PS4

Let It Die
Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture
Genre: Hack and slash
Release Date: 2015

This one’s different from the lot. Let it Die draws from both Western and Japanese cultures alike, and features a female protagonist. This game is based on Epic’s latest Unreal Engine 4 and is a PS4 exclusive, unlike most games on this list, which share history with the PC. Also, so far this is the only game on the PS4 that used the Unreal Engine 4. Initially called Lily Bergamo, the game will feature a companion app for smartphones, just like Watch Dogs.
