steamPrepaid Steam Cards to be available in India soon
Steam is awesome. It really is. Especially with the summer sales going just about right now. I’ve been wanting to play XCOM: Enemy Unknown for a while, but the retail copies for the PC were sold out in ten days, and since this is India, we never got any restocks. The price in India was Rs. 1000. On Steam, the game cost a whopping $60. That is Rs. 3600, bloody dollar inflation I tell you. But Steam Sale is on, and I noticed a flash sale (A sale that lasts only 8 hours) selling that very same XCOM for $10. That is Rs. 600 for me. I bought it right away, with my credit card. That is why Steam is so awesome!

The same can’t be said for other countless Indians who don’t own a debit or a credit card. We Indians haven’t embraced that culture yet. And no credit/debit card means no games from Steam. I could personally count ten acquaintances who’ve asked me for my credit card details to buy their own game from Steam. I try to help whenever I can (#SpreadTheGaming), but there’s a better solution to that. Why does Steam only accept these forms of payment?

How about in a country like India, where people generally use cash for their purchases. What about those guys? They need to Steam too.

You need it, YOU GOT IT!

Cybergames India has tied up with Steam to release prepaid Steam cards. What this means is, you can buy the Steam prepaid cards for whatever denominations they’re available in, like Rs. 2000, Rs. 5000, and then use these cards to purchase whatever you may like on Steam. These denominations are hypothetical though, there hasn’t been any official announcement on them yet.

But the Steam card is definitely coming. We don’t have a date yet, but stay tuned to know more.
