Four Friggin Lakh Rupees. That is what the Special Edition of the ROG Strix Scar 17 will cost. For that kind of money, it better be the most powerful machine ever. Well, from the initial looks of it, it certainly has the building blocks to be a top-of-the-line gaming machine with literally unmatchable specifications.

ROG stands for Republic of Gamers and is ASUS’ sub-brand of gaming and performance focused peripherals, hardware, laptops, even phones. ASUS has a come a long way with its ROG brand, it has rallied behind it with dedication, making ROG a household name.

Let us begin with what makes the ROG Strix Scar 17 SE so special. It goes without saying that the specifications would be top class in every aspect, but there is much more to this laptop.

The Screen

First and foremost, it comes with an aluminum lid for its insanely slim and thin bezel screen, that is 17.3 inches in size, WQHD (2560 x 1440) resolution, IPS panel with 240Hz of adaptive refresh rate, 3ms response time. This IPS panel supports upto 300nits brightness. The screen also supports Dolby Vision HDR and 100% DCI-P3.

The Specs

The Strix SCAR SE is equipped with the new top of the line Intel 12th Gen Core i9-12950HX processor, that has 16 cores and boost clocks that run up to 5.0Ghz. Not to mention the 30ML L3 cache. This CPU has a TDP of 65W and a jaw dropping 24 threads along with its 16 cores.

It is pretty insane how ASUS managed to pack this into a relatively small chassis. You also get 32GB of DDR5 RAM, up to 2 x 2TB of NVMe Gen4 SSD in RAID 0 configuration for the fastest data read and write speeds known to the mainstream tech world. Top that up with a Thunderbolt 4 port and DisplayPort support, so you actually dock the laptop with a bigger display that runs at high refresh rates.

The GPU – Best Ever Seen on a Laptop

Now, for the aspect that gamers care about the most, the graphics! The ROG Scar SE 2022 comes with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080Ti, but with a twist. The base TGP levels have been boosted by 20%, going from 125W to 150W. With NVIDIA’s dynamic boost, the SCAR SE can reach max TGP levels of up to 175W.

The 65W CPU and 175W GPU means the ROG SCAR SE is one power-hungry mean machine, meaning one will need a power adaptor that matches this need for raw watts. ASUS is supplying a 330W power adapter with this laptop. The first thought that comes to mind would be about size of the adapter, making it difficult to travel with and carry it in a backpack, but ASUS claims that this adapter is 34% smaller and 27% lighter than their previous 330W adapters. Oh, and you also get a MUX or Multiplexer switch. This allows users to manually engage or disengage the integrated graphics, allowing for better performance and power management.

The Cooling

The next set of innovations in the ROG Strix SCAR 17 SE laptop come in the cooling department. With that CPU and GPU, you can expect the temperatures to be soaring and unmanageable. ASUS claims to use liquid metal Conductonaut Extreme in both the CPU and GPU instead of traditional thermal paste. This material supposedly can reduce average temperatures by up to 15 degrees.

Instead of traditional thermal paste, the ROG Strix SCAR SE uses liquid metal.

Instead of traditional heat pipes, ASUS has equipped the ROX Strix SCAR SE with a vapor chamber design. This design greatly increases the surface area compared to heatpipe systems. Unlike conventional heat pipes that only transfer heat along their axis, vapor chamber spreads heat across its entire surface, allowing rapid absorption and
dissipation of waste heat, without adding extra bulk to the machine. This efficient heat transfer also keeps the surface of the laptop cooler, keeping your hands comfortable during entire gaming sessions.

The ROG Strix SCAR SE features a Vapor Chamber for cooling instead of traditional heat pipes.

Other Features

A backlit Chiclet keyboard with 2.0mm travel distance and per-key RGB, 4 speakers with Smart Amplifier Technology and AI noise-cancelling technology, Dolby Atmos support and Hi-Res certification are all standard with the ROX Strix SCAR. You also get a bunch of bundled accessories that include an ROG backpack, ROG Delta headset, FHD 1080p@60FPS external camera, ROG Impact Gaming Mouse and Keystone with 2 customizable armor caps. A sweet package indeed. The laptop weighs a hefty 3kgs.
